Oh boy, what did I buy this time!? I bought this on a whim from a guy on RCCrawler. It looks to be complete with the exception of the body. I can't decide whether I want to do a restoration, or a preservation. First, I have to rebuild it and figure out where everything goes.

Yeah, I was waiting for the UPS man to get here all morning. I'm a little bummed that it was missing one of the two-piece rims though. I contacted a guy in Germany who has lots of these old Hilux parts, so maybe he can help me out. Anyways, I got it all together. I didn't open anything up to look at the gears, but I think it is semi ball raced judging by the sound/operation and the fact that the axles have bearings. I hooked everything up and to my surprise, the transistorized speed controller actually works! This thing is going to be so cool once I get it finished. Bruiser body is a perfect fit! Will need a new motor boot as well. The way this thing works is really neat.

How does it work? Looks like it would act like a 3 speed.

There's a three-speed transmission though, and it works flawlessly. When I'm done, I'll have to take a video of how the unlockable front hubs work, they're really cool.

It didn't have the original tires, so I stole a set off eBay, the top of the radio box is missing, and the body is missing. I was contacted by a guy on RCCrawler about a body, but he wants $250 for it. I offered him $200 shipped and I think that was the end of it because he hasn't gotten back to me.

Ha, the contents of your box remind me of a box I have in my closet. I like the first gen of the 3 speeds for the "locking hubs". I more or less have a complete truck in parts minus the waterproof box, body and tires. I'd like to build something with it one day, even started a couple years ago by tearing down the axles to go through them and they made it to Zip-Loc bags and that's about it.
Nice score, looking forward to seeing it.

trying to track down parts for a rare rc like that would be as much fun as trying to restore a rare 1:1 in my opinion.

Well, after another $475 investment, I got all the parts on the way to finish it. Total investment should be around $600 after it's all said and done. Fair price for a $1000 truck.
